240-hour transit scope expanded to 65 ports — NIA Announcement No. 4/2025 added 5 entry ports while keeping the stay-area framework at 24 provincial-level regions.
Does your passport qualify for China's 240-hour transit visa-free policy?
Check your eligibility for China's visa-free transit policy in about two minutes, then prepare before you land.
Built for high-stakes transit decisions
This is designed to reduce high-cost uncertainty before travel day, not to act like a generic China inspiration guide.
Eligibility starts with your actual passport and onward routing, not generic visa-free headlines.
Entry port, exit port, and policy scope are checked as separate facts because they change outcomes.
Core TWOV rules are tied back to current NIA announcements and policy versions.
Why travelers get stuck in China
Based on 132 real Reddit threads from r/travelchina, r/Chinavisa, and r/solotravel (2022-2026). These are the top reasons foreign travelers struggle:
Payment system exclusion
Alipay foreign cards get silently blocked by risk control. Personal QR codes do not work with international cards. The 3% surcharge above CNY 200 is not disclosed upfront, and some ATMs reject foreign cards entirely.
Transit visa confusion
Airline staff may deny boarding for valid TWOV itineraries. Travelers confuse 240-hour transit with the 30-day visa exemption, misunderstand the third-country requirement, or choose the wrong entry port.
App dependency wall
DiDi may require a Chinese number. 12306 train ticket verification can fail with foreign passports. Restaurant QR codes depend on WeChat mini-programs, and hospital registration is mostly in Chinese.

Latest policy updates
China's transit and visa-free policies change frequently. We track every official update.
Indonesia added to the 240-hour transit policy — NIA Announcement No. 2/2025 raised the eligible-country list to 55 while keeping the official scope at 60 ports.
240-hour transit policy replaced the legacy 72/144-hour framework — NIA Announcement No. 12/2024 expanded the official implementation scope to 60 approved ports in 24 provincial-level areas.
Common questions
What's the difference between 240-hour transit and 30-day visa-free?
The 240-hour transit visa-free policy requires entering from one country and exiting to a different third country through approved ports. The 30-day visa-free policy is a unilateral exemption for citizens of selected countries with no transit or port restriction.
Do I need an onward ticket to a third country?
Yes. For 240-hour TWOV, you must have a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region different from your origin. A round trip to the same country does not qualify.
What if the airline denies me boarding?
It can happen when check-in staff are unfamiliar with TWOV. Print the official NIA policy page, use online check-in when possible, and ask the agent to verify with a supervisor or the Chinese consulate.
Can I enter China by train or ferry from Hong Kong?
Most Hong Kong land crossings and some ferry terminals are not approved TWOV entry ports. Use the checker for your specific port and itinerary.
Why can't I just figure this out when I arrive?
Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, and many Western services are blocked in China. Payment setup and bank verification are easier before departure, while you still have full internet access.
