Best Time to Visit Tiananmen Square
Arrive 1 hour before sunrise for the flag ceremony. For the most efficient logistics, you MUST visit the Square BEFORE the Forbidden City (Northbound flow). If you finish the Forbidden City at its North Gate, you cannot enter the Square from the north and will face a 3km walk back.
Insider Tips
The Golden Sequence
Always book your Square slot for the morning and Forbidden City for the late morning/afternoon. The security checkpoint for the Square is the bottleneck; clearing it first puts you on the correct side for the Palace entrance.
The Memorial Hall Trick
If square reservations are full, check for Mao Memorial Hall slots. A booking for any hall or museum bordering the square usually includes square access, saving you a separate booking step.

Survival Tips
The experience is defined by monumental scale and a 'straight-shot' logistical flow toward the Forbidden City. For a smooth day, start at the Square's southern security check early, walk north across the vast concrete expanse, and end at the Meridian Gate of the Forbidden City. This prevents the common mistake of 'backtracking' which adds miles of walking. Emergency Contacts: Area Security/Rescue: +86 010-63095718; Medical Aid: +86 010-120.
Ticketing Tips
-
Northbound Strategy: Always visit the Square BEFORE the Forbidden City. You cannot enter the square from its northern back gate; if you visit the Forbidden City first, you'll have to walk a long way back to the front.
-
Dress Code: Dress conservatively and strictly avoid any clothing with political symbols or slogans to avoid being denied entry at security.
-
Strict Reservation Waiver: Only Chairman Mao Memorial Hall or Great Hall of the People bookings waive the square reservation. Forbidden City tickets DO NOT.
-
Timing: You can enter any time within your allotted slot, but allow 60 mins for security.
Photo rules
Drones and professional tripods are prohibited. No smoking.
Skip Tiananmen Square if
Skip if you have a tight layover (under 3 hours) or cannot stand for long periods in security queues, as the entry process is famously time-consuming.
