Amap (Gaode) English Option Grayed Out? The Only Working Fix (2026)
Published January 2026 · Updated May 2026
Many travelers download Amap excitedly, only to find the English option completely grayed out and unclickable in the settings — whether you call it "grayed out" or "greyed out", the cause is the same. Stop searching through the menus — you won't find a toggle there.
Amap has a significant design quirk in its language switching logic. If you trigger the app in the wrong environment, the English option locks itself out permanently. Below is the 100% tested, 3-step forced unlock method that actually works.
The 3-Step Forced Unlock Method
Step 1: Change Your System Language
This is the most crucial foundation. Before doing anything else, ensure your smartphone's system language is set strictly to English. The app relies heavily on your OS environment to trigger its localization prompts.
Step 2: Clear ALL App Data (The Secret Step)
This is where most people fail. If you have already opened the app, or accidentally logged in with your phone number while the app was in Chinese, the English option is now permanently locked into the app's stored preferences. You must wipe the app's memory clean:
- Android Users: Go to your phone's Settings > Apps > Amap > Storage, and tap "Clear Data" (not just Clear Cache — these are separate on many Android skins like MIUI and HarmonyOS).
- iPhone (iOS) Users: The most reliable method is to completely Uninstall the app and download it again from the App Store.
🚨 CRITICAL WARNING
Do NOT log into any Chinese account or enter your phone number during this process until the app is successfully running in English. Logging in re-locks the language preference immediately.
Step 3: The First-Launch Prompt
Once your data is wiped and your system is in English, open Amap again. Because the system now detects a pure English environment and clean app data, it will automatically present a welcome pop-up asking if you want to switch to the English version. Simply tap "Yes", and you are good to go!
Troubleshooting: If the Prompt Never Appears
If you complete all three steps but Amap opens in Chinese with no English prompt, the most common causes are:
Clear Data vs. Clear Cache confusion (Android): On Xiaomi (MIUI), Huawei (HarmonyOS), and some Samsung devices, "Clear Cache" and "Clear Data" are listed separately. You must tap "Clear Data" — clearing cache alone does not wipe the language preference flag. On some MIUI versions, tap "Clear Data" twice to ensure the full wipe completes.
Residual login session: If a WeChat account or Chinese phone number was previously linked to Amap on this device, the session may survive a data clear. Sign out of all accounts in Amap's Profile > Settings > Account before clearing data.
Carrier network regional signal: Some Chinese SIM cards send regional environment signals that override OS language detection. Try enabling Airplane Mode before reopening the app after clearing data.
Amap version differences: This unlock method has been confirmed on Amap versions 13.x and 14.x (tested May 2026). If your app version differs significantly, the first-launch prompt behavior may vary. Update Amap to the latest version available in your app store before attempting the fix.
iPhone Users: Apple Maps as a Backup Option
If you are using an iPhone, you have a built-in alternative: Apple Maps. When you are physically in China, Apple Maps automatically switches to use Amap's (Gaode's) map data — so the underlying map accuracy is the same.
However, keeping the Amap app installed is still highly recommended. Amap gives you direct access to extra local services like hailing a DiDi taxi directly within the map interface, real-time transit departures, and offline city map downloads — features Apple Maps does not provide.
