Since mid-2024, foreign visitors can link international cards to WeChat Pay without a Chinese bank account. But the foreign passport real-name verification has several failure points that are different from the Chinese ID flow.
One wrong step during initial setup — especially the region selection — can lock you out entirely. This guide covers every failure in order.
The Most Critical Step — Register Before Arriving in China
New WeChat account registrations are significantly harder to complete inside China. The system requires an existing WeChat user to scan your QR code to vouch for your new account. Complete account registration from your home country using your home phone number.
Step-by-Step Setup (Current Working Method)
Step 1 — Register WeChat before arriving in China
Download WeChat from your home country's App Store or Google Play. Register with your home phone number and an existing WeChat contact to verify.
Step 2 — Access WeChat Pay and select the correct region
In WeChat: Me → Services → Wallet. When asked to select your region: choose your home country — do NOT select China/Mainland. Selecting China locks you into the domestic resident flow, which requires a Chinese bank account and Chinese ID. This cannot be changed easily after the fact.
Step 3 — Link your foreign card
Tap "Add a Card." Supported networks: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, JCB, Diners Club, UnionPay. Enter card number, expiry, CVV, cardholder name. Your bank will send a 3D Secure / OTP challenge. A small test charge (under $1) may appear and reverses automatically. Critical: Enable international online purchases and 3D Secure on your card before traveling.
Step 4 — Complete real-name verification
Me → Services → Wallet → Real-Name Verification. Select "Passport" as document type. Select your passport-issuing country. Upload a photo of your passport biodata page: flat surface, good lighting, full page, no glare, MRZ line fully readable. Complete the selfie/facial recognition step: remove glasses, neutral expression, straight-on, even lighting. Ensure your WeChat profile name matches your passport name exactly before starting. Approval: typically 30 minutes to 3 business days.
Step 5 — Set a 6-digit payment password
Required for every transaction.

Try Visa or Mastercard first — Amex, JCB, Discover, and Diners Club are officially supported but have lower first-attempt success rates. Check your banking app for a pending security alert. Enable international online purchases and 3D Secure before traveling.
WeChat Pay restricted / payment blocked
Caused by: foreign-origin account flags, VPN use, or cross-border logins. Fix: Call 95017 or use in-app Help Center to request manual review (1–3 business days).
"Address field required" during card binding
Enter your home country billing address in the exact format your bank has on file.
Workarounds if Verification Fails
- Use Alipay as primary backup. Both apps are accepted at the vast majority of merchants.
- Proceed with the unverified card-linked account for most tourist purchases — since most transactions are under ¥200 (zero fee, no verification needed for payment), you can function adequately without full verification for a short trip.
- Ask a verified Chinese friend to send you ¥10. This is a community-reported workaround (not verified by our editorial team) — receiving a small transfer from a verified Chinese user has in some cases triggered a simplified re-verification prompt.
- In-person verification: WeChat support can sometimes direct you to complete verification at specific locations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to complete real-name verification just to make payments?
Not for basic merchant payments if your card is linked. Without verification your wallet balance is capped at ¥3,000 total and you cannot send money. For most tourists paying at shops, restaurants, and metro stations, card-linked unverified payment works fine.
Can I link American Express to WeChat Pay?
Yes — American Express is officially supported on WeChat Pay (unlike Alipay where it is not). However, Visa and Mastercard have higher first-attempt success rates.
