Hangzhou Airport Commute Times (HGH)

Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH) is located about 30 km southeast of the West Lake area. Metro Line 1 (Airport Extension) connects HGH to the city center; the ride to Longxiangqiao Station near West Lake takes approximately 50–60 minutes. This is the most reliable option regardless of traffic.

Taxis and DiDi are plentiful at HGH. Under normal conditions, the trip to West Lake or Wulin Square takes about 40–55 minutes. Traffic can be heavier on weekends and during public holidays, when Hangzhou draws high volumes of domestic tourists.

Important: HGH is one of the farther airports from its city's main tourist zone among China's major transit cities. For layovers under 12 hours, focus exclusively on West Lake and its immediate surroundings — it is the highest-return area for a short stop and easy to access without wasting transit time.

Hangzhou 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit: What You Need to Know

Eligible foreign travelers entering via HGH can use the 240-hour visa-free transit framework if they hold onward tickets or related proof with confirmed seats and departure dates to a third country or region. Hangzhou and Zhejiang Province are included in the expanded interconnected transit zones — this means Hangzhou is accessible from both Shanghai and other Yangtze Delta entry points under the same visa-free framework.

Within the permitted window, you may travel freely within the designated interconnected transit zone. Movement outside these officially designated regions still requires a standard visa. Verify your nationality's eligibility before finalizing any plans.

Hotel registration is mandatory. Your accommodation must register your passport within 24 hours of check-in. International chains and established hotels handle this automatically. Smaller guesthouses and unlicensed properties may not be authorized to host foreign travelers — confirm before booking.

  • Permitted area: Expanded interconnected transit zones including Zhejiang Province, Shanghai, and connected regions
  • Must hold onward tickets or related proof with confirmed seats and departure dates to a third country/region
  • Border control retains final discretion even when a route appears compliant

Top Hangzhou Attractions Foreign Visitors Should Know About

West Lake (Xi Hu) is Hangzhou's defining attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The lake and its surrounding causeways, temples, and pagodas can be explored on foot, by bicycle rental, or by taking a boat. The Bai Causeway and Su Causeway are the best walking routes for a short visit. No advance reservation is needed for the lake itself, though specific attractions within the area (like the Lingyin Temple complex) require separate ticketing.

Lingyin Temple is one of China's most important Buddhist temples and draws large numbers of pilgrims and tourists year-round. Allow 2–3 hours including the Fei Lai Feng (Flying Peak) stone carvings. It is accessible by public bus from the West Lake area in about 20–30 minutes. It gets extremely crowded during Chinese public holidays — not ideal for short layovers during those periods.

For short layovers, the West Lake + Hefang Street (an old street with traditional food and crafts) combination delivers high value in a compact area. Save the China National Silk Museum, Longjing Tea Plantation, and Qiantang River for longer stays of 24 hours or more.

  • No reservation needed for West Lake itself; Lingyin Temple requires a separate ticket
  • Best under 12 hours: West Lake causeway walk, Hefang Street, Leifeng Pagoda
  • Best with 24h+: Lingyin Temple, Longjing Tea fields, West Lake boat tour
